One Size Doesn’t Fit All in Delegation

Delegation is a core leadership skill, but it is not a one-size-fits-all process. Each project and each person brings unique needs, skills, and challenges. Using the same delegation style in every situation can lead to misunderstandings, missed deadlines, or results that fall short of expectations.

Some tasks require a high level of structure and clear step-by-step instructions, especially when the work is new or complex. Others call for a more open-ended approach, allowing the person to bring creativity and ownership to the process. The right style depends on the nature of the work and the experience and confidence of the person doing it.

The best leaders assess both factors before deciding how to delegate. They consider the urgency of the task, the importance of precision, and the person’s track record. An experienced team member may thrive with minimal oversight, while someone newer to the work might need closer guidance and more frequent check-ins.

Flexibility is key. Shifting styles shows that you are paying attention to the unique needs of the situation rather than relying on habit. It also signals respect for the individual’s abilities and potential, creating a sense of trust and empowerment.

Failing to adapt your approach can create unnecessary friction. Too much oversight with an experienced contributor can feel like micromanaging. Too little direction with someone less familiar with the work can set them up for frustration and mistakes. The art of delegation lies in finding the balance that enables success.

When leaders customize their style, they not only get better results but also develop their people more effectively. They create opportunities for growth by providing the right mix of guidance and freedom for each situation.

Our Core Program helps leaders recognize when to adjust their delegation style, ensuring that every project and person gets the right level of direction and support.
