Say It So They Can Hear It: Adapting Your Communication Style with Awareness

by Michelle Cummings

Most leaders spend a lot of time refining what they want to say. Fewer think about how that message is actually received. But communication isn’t about transmission – it’s about connection. And connection often hinges on how well you understand your own natural style and how others might interpret it.

DiSC is one of the most widely used communication and behavior assessments for a reason. It gives people a common language to understand preferences, tendencies, and blind spots. Are you fast-paced and assertive? Warm and people-focused? Analytical and cautious? Each DiSC style brings strengths—but also potential friction when misunderstood.

For example, a “D” style communicator might speak with urgency and brevity, while a “S” style receiver might value harmony and calm. Without awareness, that exchange can feel rushed or insensitive. Or a “C” style might provide detailed explanations that overwhelm a “i” style who thrives on big-picture energy. These disconnects aren’t personal – they’re predictable. And that makes them manageable.

Understanding your style helps you adjust your tone, pace, and approach based on who you’re talking to. That doesn’t mean being inauthentic – it means being effective. Leaders who flex their style to match their audience are more likely to build trust, avoid confusion, and influence with clarity.

Self-awareness is the first step. Ask yourself: How do I typically communicate? What feedback have I received about my tone or delivery? How might someone with a different DiSC style experience my approach? These reflections turn everyday conversations into opportunities for growth.

The Voice Module of our Core Program helps leaders discover their DiSC profile and understand how their style impacts communication. It also equips them with practical tools to adapt without losing authenticity – so their message is not only heard, but felt and remembered.
